UR-110 TTH TANTALUM BEZEL LIMITED EDITION OF 55 PIECES
A real sense of style, the use of a Tantalum hull/bezel gives the UR-110 a distinct look! In 2011watch connoisseurs were wooed by the technical innovation of UR-110's new calibre, and in 2012 we followed up with the unveiling of the TTH "Tantalum Hull."
Just like a vessel derives its strength from its unbreakable hull, the 110's power is from its bezel. A tough look that commands respect and new upgraded armour. Tantalum metal is a robust particularly hard and dense metal, well known for resistance to corrosion and for its bio-inertness. With a thickness of 4.10mm compared to the 2.40mm of the previous models. The sapphire crystal has also been beefed up, and the whole look is more battle-hardened. With its satin and sand-blasted finishing and blue/grey tones, six screws hold it into place with the titanium case. Its registration number etched on the sapphire crystal of the UR-110 TTH at 8 o'clock.
A real hard hitter, Tantalum is not often used in the watch industry due to the difficulty of machining because of its strength. At URWERK we don't go with the easy option and combined with our 2011 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève prize-winning satellite complication the UR-110 TTH looks like a beast!
A revolving hour satellite follows a vertically arced line, graded from 0 to 60 minutes, in a downward motion. Planetary gearing keeps the three hour-satellites, and their arrow-shaped "torpedoes" in parallel formation as they take turns to indicate the time as they pass the 60-minute track. This performance is made possible utilizing an architecture featuring three levels of complexity:
- A central carousel providing the complication with stability and equilibrium
- Planetary gearing assuring the parallel rotation of the three hour-satellites as they orbit the dial
- Three counter-rotating hour modules – each comprising an hour satellite, minute hand and counterbalance – are each mounted on a planetary gear. These three modules are in constant counter-rotation to offset the direction of rotation of the central carousel.
The dial side control board displays, Day/Night indicator; 'Oil Change' alerting service intervals and small seconds. Turn the UR-110 over and discover the two turbine windows which regulated the winding rate of the uni-directional rotor.
Felix Baumgartner - "Tantalum is a rare metal of which the name comes from Tantalus, a Greek mythological figure synonymous with temptation, we therefore naturally succumbed to its charms! Its colour is such that we decided to use it in its natural state while satin-finishing and sand-blasting helped to enhance the natural beauty of this intriguing material."
Martin Frei - "The UR-110 already existed, but we are always curious and eager to discover new visual expressions of an existing model. A material like Tantalum, which we used for the first time for the UR-110TTH, can reveal very different aspects of the watch. The dark, slightly violet-blue colour of the pure element, its weight, and its tough, highly corrosion-resistant properties reveal an aesthetic side of UR-110 that was completely unknown to us. The rare, dense, ductile and very hard metal called for a thicker bezel and extra screws, so I named this extraordinary version of the UR110: Tantalum Hull, like with the armoured hull of a Klingon spaceship."
